Dorset Gates:

The Dorset Gate is a frame ledge and braced, straight top, patterned gate. Wooden bar are standard but metal bars can be added in certain circumstances. Gate and post fittings are also available. As with our Sheds and all that we produce in our own workshop, our aim is to manufacture a quality product that will last, that is a fair price and value for money, our gates are no exception. With a variety of styles, grades, softwood or hardwood we’re sure we can meet your requirements.

All of our gates are produced using through mortice and tenon joints, which are then glued and wedged, the strongest and most durable way to join the gate styles and rails together. They can be made in either Softwood or Hardwood. We use Scandinavian Redwood and Accoya for our softwood gates and European Oak and Iroko for Hardwood. In addition to the material used we also have three grades to choose from much like our garden buildings of Standard, Deluxe and Robust.

Hardwood /or Softwood?

Contrary to popular belief, Hardwood is not necessarily harder or more dense than softwood. Balsa wood for example, one of the least dense woods available is in fact a hardwood, and the yew tree which is a great deal tougher than many hardwoods is actually a softwood. Hardwood trees distribute their seeds via another body i.e apple or a hard shell such as an acorn. Softwood distribute directly via the wind, pine trees for example release into the wind when they reach maturity. The main differences of the two are, softwoods are less durable but are considerably cheaper, Hardwoods are more durable but are more expensive.

Scandinavian Redwood: – Softwood

The origin of our redwood is Swedish. It is a far better quality than its Russian and Finnish neighbours that is also available on the market. Scandinavian Redwood has a tighter grain structure making it denser and harder wearing. This is an ideal timber for a strong economical gate or garden building. This timber i then painted with your choice of Ronseal solvent based treatment in Light brown, Dark Brown, Autumn Brown or Green.

Accoya: – Modified Softwood

Accoya is a soft wood pine lumber that goes through an acetylation process producing a timber that has a performance second to none. Due to the intense brining solution increase it longevity that exceeds nearly all other timbers including Teak! With the acetylation process steel and iron will react with the timber and cause staining so stainless steel fixings will be needed created the ultimate low maintenance ultra long lasting gates.

African Iroko: – Hardwood

From the wet coast of Africa this is the most popular choice of hardwood for gates available at &N Timber. Much like oak it is very dense, very strong, and very durable but a slightly cheeper alternative to the European Oak. It is often referred to as African /or Nigerian teak, although not relating to the ‘teak family tree’. It is one of the most aesthetically pleasing timber with is rich colour of deep red and vibrant yellow grain structure. No two gates are the same.

European Oak: – Hardwood

European Oak trees are generally longer, much much straighter, although skinnier than one of the British Oak tree we see dotted around Dorset. Grown in and around Britain, France, and Poland. Oak is a very dense, very strong and very durable timber making it ideal for gates. Oak contains Tannic acid which corrodes steel and iron fittings, which can cause permanent blue stains an the wood surface, so all fitting would have to be stainless steel.
